Work 4.0 [001]
bringing work back to life
Hey, it’s Mathew. This is it, edition # 1 — our first Work 4.0 Newsletter!
We’re writing this during a massive transition moment. Work is changing and we desperately need highly skilled leaders.
The thing is, right now…
60% of managers fail in their first 18 months.
Why? It’s simple:
Leadership is a completely different skillset than engineering, sales, product, data, customer success, design, finance, or anything else.
Every great IC starts as a novice manager.
But only 9% of new managers get training.
That’s why we’re building MatterMore.
If you’re reading this, I’m grateful to have you joining us on the journey of Work 4.0 — our new weekly newsletter where we share insights, events, and curated resources on how work is changing.
Through the last year, I’ve been meeting with hundreds of execs scaling epic companies who are all running into the same challenge:
The managers they elevate or hire are failing.
TBH, it’s not just managers…our entire system of learning and education is broken.
But it’s not all bad news.
We believe we can redesign our L&D systems so 100% of managers do get onboarding AND ongoing training completely personalized to who they are and what your business is.
And we believe this will bring failure rates into the single digits.
The resources here can help us shape what the future of work & learning should be. We’re so excited to have you with us in the conversation as we all shape that future together.
PS: Join us for a special event: It’s on June 27th in FiDi. We’re recording a live podcast with Marie Gomez COO / Head of Operations for Business Partners and Employee Relations at Goldman Sachs all about the future of HR We have epic partners and sponsors like Othership, LMNT, Upflex and more. |

New Insight About Generational Differences
Impact Of Organizational Communication On Employee Relations And Productivity Among Millennial And Gen Z At Workplace [May 2024]
Millennials and Gen Z make up 40% of global workforce and this percentage is expected to rise to 58% by 2030. There are significant differences in how millennials and generation Z view their roles and responsibilities in the workplace.
A recent study published in May 31, 2024 found the following differences appeared through their research:
Work Expectations and Motivation: “Both approach work in a manner that is distinct from both Generation Y and Generation X"
Gen Z: Prefers clear, concise communication and values instant feedback. They are motivated by stability and often prefer a structured work environment with clear expectations.
Millennials: Value flexibility and are motivated by opportunities for growth and personal development. They are more likely to seek out work-life balance and meaningful work experiences.
Communication Styles
Gen Z: Prefers digital communication, such as texting and instant messaging, and may find face-to-face communication less comfortable.
Millennials: More comfortable with a mix of communication styles, including face-to-face meetings, emails, and digital communication.
Work-Life Balance:
Gen Z: Values job security and work-life balance, often seeking clear boundaries between work and personal life.
Millennials: Also value work-life balance but may be more willing to blur the lines between work and personal life for the sake of career advancement and personal growth.
New Lit- Review About Effective Leadership Behaviors
The impact of leadership on the workplace learning of individuals and teams: a literature review and synthesis [May 2024]
Teams show higher creativity and learning when there is a moderate-high level of ethical leadership. Extremely low or high levels of ethical leadership negatively impact team creativity and learning.
Ethical leadership involves:
Role Modeling Behavior: Ethical leaders demonstrate exemplary behavior that aligns with stated standards and values. This includes acting with integrity, fairness, and showing concern for others
Relational Closeness: Ethical leaders foster a trusting supportive relationship between leaders and employees. This encourages open communication, and facilitates a safe environment for employees to learn and try new ideas and working methods.
Negotiation of Meaning: Ethical leaders engage in meaningful discussions with employees to negotiate goals, expectations, and the interpretation of tasks and outcomes. This negotiation process helps in aligning the leader's and employees' understanding, thereby promoting a shared vision and enhancing workplace learning.
Leadership training programs should focus on strengthening expectations and abilities for leader modeling, providing support, and negotiating meaning with employees to enhance workplace learning processes.

MATTERMOVERS: 🔥 3 Upgrades for the Future of Work
Karl Thomsen | Maestro Leadership
🗝️ Learn From Mistakes → Karl talks about the pressure of feeling like an imposter and the importance of being open about one's limitations and learning from errors to improve as a leader.
🗝 Center Those You Support → “If you'll think about what the role of a conductor is, we're masters at understanding what to facilitate. Remember, we're not the ones that wrote the music, most of the time. And you know, honestly, our butts are to the audience, which makes us a little bit introverted, right, but what we do is compel and facilitate for others, to bring out the best in them.”
🗝️ Empower Others Expertise → “I will stare at my director of engineering and go, ‘No, I have no idea what the hell you're talking about. Walk me through that.’ If you're okay with not knowing, you can help others better unlock their genius.”
Karl is the SVP of People and Coaching @ Invisible. You can hear more about these keys and Karl’s story in the upcoming podcast episode coming out in July.
