Work 4.0 [004]
bringing work back to life
This is now my second full week back from Burning Man. I’m still reflecting on and integrating the whole experience.
It was my first time and as soon as I got there I was confronted with a deep sense of FOMO:
- Rushing to the next event.
- Chasing an ideal experience.
- Feeling like the present wasn’t enough.
But Burning Man had other plans.
Moment by moment “the playa” (as the salt pan where the event takes place is called), started to humble me.
It urged me to slow down and be with what was immediately in front of me.
By releasing the urge to be everywhere, I found exactly what I didn't know I needed:
Genuine connection with myself, those around me, and my environment.
I started to feel peace and full.
#PeaceFull became the theme of my burn.
Since getting back I’ve been thinking about how this applies to work.
In our march for success, we often overlook the importance of being present and relating authentically with the people we work with.
This is actually counterproductive as the behavior science shows.
Because a sense of Connection actually makes us feel more motivated to show up.
So the next time you meet a coworker, fight the urge to hop directly into work.
Take a moment to be present with the human who’s on the other side of the screen or table.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT: LMNT
LMNT's research-backed formula delivers the perfect electrolyte ratio for peak brain function. Sodium, potassium, magnesium - LMNT has them in spades. What it doesn't have is sugar, caffeine, or sketchy ingredients.
The best part? It tastes like a treat. We always keep our office stocked with the Chile-Mango — highly recommend.
MATTERMOVERS: 🔥 3 Upgrades for the Future of Work
DJ Moran | Psychology of Performance at Work
🗝️ Psychological Flexibility → "Psychological flexibility is the ability to contact the present moment... and be willing to change what you're doing, or if it's hard, keep doing this thing that is healthy and worthwhile for you."
🗝️ Acceptance of Emotions → "What if you could realize that as a human being you're sometimes going to feel mad, nervous, angry, frustrated, irritated, guilty... and then not look at those as negative emotions but just natural emotions."
🗝️ Clarifying Values → "Not a lot of folks take the time to start to clarify what's purposeful. Like you're only going to be on this planet for a finite period of time... What are you gonna do with that?"
